For some families an impending birth does not just mean one new arrival, but two, three or possibly more!!!

Being told you are having twins or triplets can be a great shock! The care shown by a stranger knitting a gift for the new babies at an overwhelming time is appreciated beyond measure.

The New Zealand Multiple Birth Association and its network of affiliated clubs are thrilled to be the recipients of this years Knit World community project. We are excited that local knitters will be able to give gifts to local families through our network of 22 clubs around New Zealand.

There are over 900 sets of twins and triplets born each year. Many of these families will benefit from your time & generosity of your garments. Thank you.

We are thrilled to have “Knit World” support us with the Foundation’s knitting programme over the coming year.

There are approximately 1,000 babies a year in the Neo Natal unit alone equating to 30,000 bed changes a year. We regularly receive comments from mum’s like “I’m so thrilled to be able at last to dress my baby” and “It’s so lovely to have clothing that fits.” “The demand for garments never ends” says Trish Lee the Foundation’s Volunteer Manager.

The babies require specially sized garments made only of ‘pure’ wool and the very small sized garments can be hard to source in retail outlets. Wellington Children’s Hospital is a tertiary hospital with patients coming from Taranaki across to the Hawkes Bay, down to the Lower North Island & to the top of the South Island

Knit World Knits for Newborns

Staff and customers from Knit World stores throughout New Zealand have been knitting up a storm in support of newborns at Wellington and Kenepuru Hospitals.

Wellington Hospitals & Health Foundation, one of the official charities for Knit World this year, received the first delivery of knitted cardigans today.

“We are overwhelmed by the generosity of so many people who so kindly give their time, expertise and finances to help our newborns” said Trish Lee, Manager of the Hospital Volunteer Service.

Cardigans will be gifted to families in Maternity Units at Wellington and Kenepuru Hospitals and will be used extensively in Wellington’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

This wonderful gift will compliment the more than 7,000 baby garments and quilts made by the Foundation’s Volunteers every year for use in the Hospitals. For many families in the Neonatal Unit, these donated items are the only ones they will receive that are small enough for their premature baby.

Public wishing to support families in the Units and the Hospital Volunteer Service, can donate online at www.whhf.org.nz/donate.

Here is a comment that was left on their facebook page

" Wow that is so touching. Great work Knitworld and all your fantastic customers who took the time to knit these wee cardigans. As the mother of a 2lb prem who came home under 4lb I know just how appreciated the knitwear received by NICU is by parents and staff. Thank you all so much on behalf of the huge numbers of us who benefit from your kindness x x "
