Neo Natal Trust

“Making a difficult start to life that little bit easier”

Every year approximately 10% of all babies are born premature (before 37 weeks gestation) in New Zealand. There are also full-term babies whose condition or illness requires admission to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Special CareBaby Unit (SCBU) after they are born.

All of these parents are thrust into a terrifying world where their much loved tiny baby, who they have just met, is surrounded by machines, beeps, alarms, wires, needles, doctors and nurses.

In all, over 5,000 babies have a difficult start to life in New Zealand each year. The Neonatal Trust exists to support these families through a journey that can be full of stress and anxiety. This help is provided in a number of different ways, all aimed at “making a difficult start to life that little bit easier”.

Like all not-for-profits they are heavily reliant on the goodwill of volunteers and community support.

Be a proud supporter who helps to make a difficult start to life that little bit easier for families going through the stress and anxiety of a neonatal journey by knitting/crocheting larger size prem & or full term baby garments along with 10cm x 10cm knitted/crocheted squares which can be made into
blankets.

Neonatal babies are unable to properly regulate their body temperature in the same way as healthy and full-term babies. Non-breathable yarns such as synthetics and acrylics can trap moisture and cause babies to cool down rather than stay warm and dry. The use of wool is key to ensuring their body can focus on growing and developing.

You can also help too by purchasing the Neonatal Trust Knitting for Prems Book for only $5.00  which has a selection of 14 knitting items in 2, 3 and 4ply and proceeds of this book go to the Neonatal Trust. There are some errors in this book and an errata is included with every purchase.
